Traffic on the Rangamati-Khagrachhari road remained suspended on Saturday due to a half-day road blockade called by the Chhatra-Janata Sangram Parishad in protest against an attack in Sajek.
The blockade was being observed peacefully in support of the ongoing movement in Sajek and in protest against attacks, police baton charges and vandalism of homes and shops during previous peaceful programmes.
Vehicular movement within Rangamati town and boat services along local waterways remained normal since morning. However, public transport from the district town to Khagrachhari was suspended.
Protesters were seen picketing at several points along the Manikchhari and Kutukchhari roads. In some places, demonstrators blocked roads and burned tyres in support of the programme.
The district administration took strict security measures to maintain law and order. Additional police and security personnel were deployed at key points across the town, while patrols were intensified to prevent any violence.
Rangamati Superintendent of Police Muhammad Abdur Rakib said, police were on high alert to prevent disorder or any untoward incident during the blockade.
He said, the deployment of additional police personnel and intensified patrols had kept the law and order situation normal and under control. No untoward incident had been reported so far, he added.
Emergency services were kept outside the purview of the blockade to minimise public suffering. Ambulances, vehicles carrying patients, fire service vehicles, transport carrying emergency medicines and vehicles used by journalists for news coverage continued to operate as usual.
Meanwhile, an indefinite blockade called jointly by the Sajek Ganadhikar Rakkha Committee and the Sajek Karbari Association over their three-point demand entered its third day in Sajek.
The blockade was being observed peacefully, with the overall law and order situation in Sajek and adjoining areas remaining normal and under control.
Police, the army and other law enforcement agencies were working jointly to ensure the safety of people staying in Sajek and maintain peace in the area.
