A Jubo Dal activist was allegedly hacked to death over a previous dispute in Wazirpur upazila of Barishal on Friday night. Police have detained nine people in connection with the killing.
The deceased, Kawser Howlader, 32, was the son of the late Monafser Howlader of Almdi village in Wazirpur. He worked as a motorcycle rider for hire. Another man, Rashed Amin Howlader, was injured in the attack.
The incident took place around 10:00 PM on Friday, October 23, near the border between Gopalganj and Barishal, on the Satla-Kandi road in Satla union.
According to injured Rashed, an argument broke out between two groups at Satla Ekota Bazar on Friday morning over a minor incident. Kawser and Ashikul later got into a scuffle with Nanna Molla, Sajal Molla, Mehedi Molla and their uncle Kanchan Molla.
There were also allegations that Sajal had been beaten in the Almdi area earlier. In response, Sajal's brother Iqbal Hossain Nanna, who lives in Saudi Arabia, allegedly posted provocative remarks on social media. He returned to Bangladesh from Saudi Arabia on October 21.
Rashed claimed that a group of people travelled from Dhaka and Barishal in a microbus and on motorcycles on Friday night to take revenge for the earlier incidents. Around 10:00 PM, they attacked him and Kawser. The two jumped from a bridge into the water of an adjacent wetland to escape and later took shelter at the house of a man named Habib Howlader beside the road.
Rashed said 18 to 20 attackers broke into the house and repeatedly struck Kawser with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured. Rashed survived by hiding behind a door.
Local residents rescued the two injured men and took them to Kotalipara Upazila Health Complex, where the attending doctor declared Kawser dead. His body was sent to Gopalganj for an autopsy.
Wazirpur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rakibul Islam said a microbus carrying people suspected of involvement in the killing was intercepted by detective police near the Padma Bridge toll plaza. They were later handed over to Wazirpur Model Police Station.
The officer said an investigation was under way to establish the motive and identify those involved. Legal action would be taken after verifying the detainees' identities and roles. The victim's family was preparing to file a murder case.
Additional Barishal Superintendent of Police Md Alaol Hasan confirmed that nine people had been detained in connection with the killing. Their identities were being withheld for the sake of the investigation, he said, adding that operations were continuing to arrest other suspects.
