At least 18 people were killed and 56 injured after two earthquakes, measuring 7 and 5 on the Richter scale, struck Tibet in China. At least 11 of the injured are in critical condition.

The tremors also destroyed at least 339 houses across the region, according to preliminary assessments.

The first earthquake struck at 10:30 PM local time on Friday, followed by a second tremor at around 11:10 PM, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The epicentre of the first, magnitude-7 earthquake was in a remote mountainous area of the Himalayas, about 390 kilometres northeast of Lhasa, the Tibetan capital, at a depth of 10 kilometres.

The second earthquake originated about 323 kilometres north-northwest of Basar district in India's Arunachal Pradesh, near the Tibetan border, at a depth of 15 kilometres.

Videos circulating on social media showed people leaving restaurants as the first tremor struck, while items fell from supermarket shelves.

The Tibetan regional government has deployed more than 300 police personnel to assist with rescue operations. China's central government has issued a Level 3 emergency alert and dispatched relief supplies and specialised rescue teams.

Heavy snowfall is forecast in affected areas over the next 24 hours, raising concerns that difficult weather conditions could hamper rescue efforts and increase the death toll.

In January 2025, an earthquake in Tingri county in Tibet killed at least 126 people.

In another disaster, a devastating flash flood struck the Tibet-Nepal border region on August 26, reportedly killing around 1,500 people, with a similar number still missing. The region was also hit by an earthquake measuring around 5.5 in the first week of September.

In December 2023, an earthquake measuring 6.2 struck China's Gansu province, killing more than 120 people.
