Two police officers were injured in an attack during a rally by members of the banned Bangladesh Awami League’s youth and student wings, Jubo League and Bangladesh Chhatra League, in Gopalganj on Saturday. A police vehicle was also vandalised.
The incident took place at Bedgram Ferry Ghat in Gopalganj Sadar upazila on Saturday afternoon, said Gopalganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Aminul Islam.
According to the OC, police were conducting routine patrols in the area when several people, led by Jubo League leader Milon and Chhatra League leader Mursalin, were marching in support of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
When police tried to stop the procession, the participants allegedly attacked them with sticks, injuring two officers, including Sub-Inspector Phul Mia. The attackers also vandalised a police vehicle.
The OC said the marchers later chased the police officers, forcing them to leave the scene in their vehicle.
The injured officers received primary treatment at Gopalganj 250-bed General Hospital.
Police are conducting operations to arrest those involved in the attack and vandalism, the OC added.
