Naval police detained 50 fishermen in separate drives over the past 24 hours for defying the government ban on catching hilsa in the Padma and Meghna rivers in Chandpur.
The information was confirmed by the Chandpur Naval Police Superintendent's office on Saturday afternoon.
During the operations, authorities filed seven cases, seized 50 kilograms of hilsa fish, and impounded four fishing boats. A mobile court subsequently sentenced 20 of the detained fishermen to varying terms of imprisonment and fines.
Among the detainees, 10 underage individuals were released to their families on bonds, while regular cases were filed against the remaining 20 adults.
Chandpur Naval Police Superintendent Syed Mushfiqur Rahman stated that joint operations conducted by Chandpur Sadar Naval Police Station, Mohanpur, and Harina police outposts led to the arrests and seizures as part of ongoing efforts to protect mother hilsa during the breeding season.
