Dear Sir,
Rajshahi University is a major centre of higher education in northern Bangladesh, but incidents of snatching have raised serious concerns about campus security.
Recently, two men on a motorcycle snatched a student’s mobile phone on the road beside Khaleda Zia Hall and escaped through Kajla Gate despite the presence of many people, police and security personnel. Although CCTV footage exists, investigators could not identify the motorcycle’s number plate.
Unfortunately, this was not an isolated incident. Students have reported similar experiences, while the open main gate at night makes it difficult to control outsiders’ entry. There are also allegations that outsiders ride motorcycles at high speed and sound their horns to harass women in West Para.
The proctor has said a case will be filed if necessary. However, campus safety cannot wait. The university must strengthen night-time gate monitoring, enforce speed limits, install CCTV cameras, increase patrols and identify and prosecute the snatchers.
