Elderly man dies after attack over FB post

KAMALNAGAR, LAXMIPUR, Oct 24: A 60-year-old man died after being allegedly beaten by relatives of his nephew’s former wife over a Facebook (FB) post in Kamalnagar Upazila of the district on Friday night.

The victim, Fazle Ali Hazari, was attacked at Bottoli Bazar in Char Kadira Union after relatives of his nephew’s former wife confronted him over an emotional Facebook post about the woman, according to his family. He was taken to Noakhali General Hospital and died on the way to Dhaka for advanced treatment as his condition deteriorated.

Hazari’s nephew, Delwar Mahmud, had married Jerin Akter about two years ago, but the couple later divorced over family disputes. After Akter remarried recently, Delwar, who works in Feni, posted an emotional message about his former wife on Facebook, angering her relatives, the family said.

Hazari’s son, Mohammad Faisal, alleged that Akter’s cousin Mahfuz led the attack and demanded the arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible. The accused have gone into hiding, and their comments could not be obtained.
