1 killed in Mirpur road accident

A man was killed and four others were injured when a covered van hit a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Mirpur upazila of Kushtia on Sunday.

The accident occurred around 12:45pm on the Kushtia-Meherpur regional highway in the Char Mile area.

The deceased was identified as Zakaria Islam, 23, son of Nazrul Islam of Boro Gangdia area in Daulatpur upazila.

According to injured auto-rickshaw driver Monirul Islam, he was travelling from Kushtia town to Gangni in Meherpur with four passengers when a speeding covered van hit the vehicle head-on in the Char Mile area.

The driver and all four passengers were injured in the accident, he said.

Locals rescued the injured and took them to Kushtia 250-bed General Hospital, where doctors declared Zakaria dead.

The injured were identified as Monirul Islam, passenger Rebeka Khatun, 42, and her daughter-in-law Tamanna, 20. They are receiving treatment at the hospital. Their homes are in the Gangni area of Meherpur.

Mirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahidul Islam said legal proceedings in connection with the incident were underway.
