Police recovered the hanging body of a Comilla University (CoU) student from a rented apartment in Fatullah of Narayanganj on Saturday (October 24) night, subsequently taking her husband into custody for questioning.

The deceased was identified as Farjana Islam, a student of the Pharmacy Department (undergraduate 2019–20 session and postgraduate 2024–25 session) at Comilla University. Her husband, Najmul Islam, is an alumnus of the same department.

Officers recovered Farjana's body around 11:00PM on Saturday from a rented flat in the Signboard area of Fatullah.

Fatullah Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Mahbub Alam and Sub-Inspector (SI) Gazi Suman Mahtab confirmed on Sunday (October 25) afternoon that initial investigations point toward suicide, though exact causes will be determined following an autopsy report. A suicide note was recovered from the scene, and the victim's husband was detained for interrogation.

However, the victim's family alleged that Farjana was murdered in a planned manner shortly after a pending domestic violence case against her husband was withdrawn.

According to Farjana's brother, Ariful Islam, the couple married three years ago, after which Najmul allegedly subjected her to continuous physical and mental abuse for dowry, extracting 5 to 7 lakh taka from her family.

Following severe abuse, Farjana moved to her paternal home in December last year and filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. The family recently agreed to withdraw the lawsuit after receiving assurances from the suspect's relatives that the torture would cease.

Ariful stated that his sister spoke normally with him around 6:00PM on the evening of her death, raising severe suspicions regarding the sudden news of her death received around 10:00PM. The family demanded a thorough investigation to ensure justice.
