Police have arrested two leaders of the BNP and the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League in connection with an attack on police and the snatching of a wanted Chhatra League leader from police custody in Ishwarganj, Mymensingh.
The arrestees were produced before a court on Sunday afternoon. They were arrested during separate raids in Sarisha Union and Ashrabpur area of Ishwarganj Union on Saturday night.
The arrested men are Nur Mohammad Milon, 50, joint convener No. 1 of Sarisha Union BNP, and Nayan Mondal, 28, former joint general secretary of the banned Ishwarganj Sadar Union Chhatra League.
According to police, Chhatra League leader Riaz-ul Alam alias Shaheen, 30, joint general secretary of Ishwarganj upazila Chhatra League, went to watch a friendly football match at the field of Dekuarchar Dakhil Madrasa in Sarisha Union on Friday evening. Several cases have been filed against him.
After learning of his whereabouts, a police team led by Sub-Inspector Mazharul Islam of the Atharbaria Raybazar Police Investigation Centre detained Shaheen and was taking him to the police station when several local people allegedly blocked their way.
A scuffle broke out, during which the police personnel were allegedly assaulted and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw used by police was vandalised. The attackers then allegedly snatched Shaheen from police custody.
Sub-Inspector Mazharul Islam filed a case with Ishwarganj Police Station over the incident. The case names 27 people and includes another 25 to 30 unidentified accused.
Police said Milon, listed as the fifth accused in the case, was arrested in the Sarisha area, while Mondal was arrested in Ashrabpur.
