Islamic speaker Dr Syed Muhammad Enayetullah Abbasai has been served with a legal notice over allegedly making derogatory remarks about journalists and threatening to have them beaten.

Supreme Court lawyer Khademul Islam sent the notice on Sunday on behalf of Azharul Islam Sujon, an executive committee member of the Court Reporters Unity, an organisation of journalists covering lower courts.

The notice asks Abbasai to withdraw his remarks and offer an unconditional apology within seven days of receiving it. Otherwise, legal action will be taken under applicable laws over alleged defamation, threats of assault and incitement against journalists and their profession, it said.

According to the notice, Abbasai made the remarks at an annual religious sermon and prayer gathering at Nishchintapur Hafizia Madrasa in Matlab upazila of Chandpur on October 19.

During his speech, he allegedly described Bangladeshi journalists in derogatory terms and said they should be beaten like dogs.

He also accused journalists of failing to report positively on a young state minister's alleged efforts to dismantle a drug syndicate, claiming that they instead focused on an incident involving the minister running with a pistol.

Abbasai further accused journalists of yellow journalism and alleged that they were funded by foreign intelligence agencies and did not want Bangladesh to prosper.

The notice said the remarks amounted to a threat against journalists, including through his followers, and created an intimidating environment for the media. It described the comments as derogatory and defamatory towards professional journalists and a threat to their safety.
