Students at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) want to return to classes after a 34-day shutdown but have vowed to continue their movement demanding the reinstatement of former vice-chancellor Professor Abu Sayed Muhammad Sayem.
In an open letter on Sunday, students sought teachers’ cooperation to resume academic activities, saying the prolonged closure was harming their studies. They warned of tougher protests if newly appointed vice-chancellor Professor Sheikh Shariful Alam enters the campus.
The CUET Teachers’ Association also decided on Sunday to urge students to return to classes. Association Joint Secretary Samiun Basir said individual departments would decide when to resume classes.
The shutdown began on September 22 after the Ministry of Education replaced Sayem with Sheikh Shariful Alam a day earlier. Teachers, officers and employees also joined work abstention and non-cooperation programmes demanding Sayem’s reinstatement.
