Officials of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) seized 49 gold bangles worth Tk 2.80 crore from a passenger arriving from Jeddah at Shah Amanat International Airport on Sunday (October 25) morning.
Acting on a secret tip-off, customs intelligence officials took up positions at the airport earlier in the day. The suspect, identified as Md Sharif, arrived from Jeddah aboard Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-136 at 11:12AM.
Sharif attempted to cross the Green Channel without declaring the gold ornaments. When intercepted and questioned by CIID officials, he denied carrying any gold.
Subsequent searching of his handbag inside the airport customs hall in the presence of representatives from other agencies led to the recovery of 49 gold bangles weighing a total of 1.48 kilograms.
According to airport customs authorities, the estimated market value of the seized gold, including applicable duties and taxes, stands at Tk 2,80,23,800.
Legal proceedings against the passenger are currently underway.
