As preparations intensify ahead of the by-election in the Thakurgaon-1 constituency (Sadar, Ruhia and Bhulli), the district administration has imposed restrictions on the presence of outsiders to ensure a free, fair and peaceful electoral environment. Election campaigning will end at 8:00 AM on Tuesday (October 27).

The directive was issued through a public notice signed on Sunday (October 25) by Mohammad Rafiqul Haque, the Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate.

The restrictions will remain in effect from 8:00 a.m. on October 27 until 4:00 p.m. on October 30. During this period, people who are neither residents nor registered voters of the constituency will not be allowed to remain in the electoral area.

According to the public notice, in line with a decision by the Election Commission, only people involved in election-related activities, individuals authorized by the Election Commission, and residents or voters of the constituency will be permitted to remain in the area during the specified period. Legal action will be taken against anyone who violates the directive.

Voting in the Thakurgaon-1 by-election is scheduled for October 29. The restrictions will apply from 48 hours before polling begins until 24 hours after polling ends. The constituency comprises Thakurgaon Sadar, Ruhia and Bhulli.

The notice stated that the decision had been taken in response to a letter issued by the Election Commission Secretariat on October 25, 2026. People involved in election-related activities and those authorized by the Commission are exempt from the restrictions. Residents and voters of the constituency are also exempt.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rafiqul Haque said the administration’s goal was to ensure that the by-election was held in a free, impartial and festive atmosphere. He added that the restrictions had been imposed in accordance with Election Commission directives so that voters could visit polling stations and cast their ballots without fear or intimidation. Strict legal action would be taken against anyone who violated the order during the specified period.

Following the scrutiny of nomination papers on September 29, the nominations of six candidates were declared valid for the Thakurgaon-1 by-election. They were BNP candidates Mirza Faisal Amin and Md. Obaidullah Masud, along with Delwar Hossain, Kademul Islam, Abdul Alim Nizami and Hossain Muhammad Omar Faruk, candidates representing Jamaat-e-Islami and like-minded parties.

However, on October 5, BNP district vice-president Md. Obaidullah Masud withdrew his candidacy, citing his party’s decision. As a result, Mirza Faisal Amin is contesting the election as the BNP candidate.

The Thakurgaon-1 constituency has a total of 516,138 registered voters. Of them, 250,053 are men, 256,572 are women and four are third-gender voters.

The constituency, comprising Thakurgaon Sadar, Ruhia and the newly established Bhulli upazila, includes 22 union parishads and one municipality.
