Son beats father to death

A 55-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by his son over a demand for money to buy drugs and a family dispute in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur.

The deceased was identified as Abdus Samad, son of Gias Uddin of Saitalia village. The accused, Anwar Hossain, fled the scene after the incident.

The incident took place early Sunday morning.

Officer-in-Charge of Sreepur Police Station Mohammad Shahinur Alam said, police had launched a drive to arrest Anwar. The victim's family was preparing to file a case over the incident.

The OC said, Anwar had been sent to rehabilitation centres several times, but his family had failed to keep him away from drug abuse after his return. Enraged by his father's objections to his drug use, Anwar allegedly struck him with a stick, killing him on the spot.

Witnesses said, Anwar returned home intoxicated on Saturday night and became involved in an argument with family members. When the situation escalated, his father tried to calm him down and stop him. Anwar then allegedly struck his father repeatedly on the head and chest with a stick before fleeing.

Police visited the scene, prepared an inquest report and collected evidence. The body was recovered and sent to the morgue of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur for an autopsy.
