Missing university student’s body recovered from Jamuna

The body of a 23-year-old university student, who went missing while swimming with friends in the Jamuna River in Sirajganj, was recovered on Monday morning, a day after he drowned.

The body of Shahriar Nur Hossain Jisan was found near the Enayetpur Spur Dam ghat in Chauhali upazila around 9AM, as a five-member diving team from Rajshahi resumed its search operation.

Police and Fire Service personnel, assisted by local residents, recovered the body after it suddenly surfaced near the spot where he had gone missing.

Jisan was a first-year student in the Tourism and Hotel Management Department at the National University’s Gazipur campus. He was the son of Ali Akbar and a resident of Haji Rafique Road in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj.

Enayetpur Police Station OC Zahid Hossain said Jisan visited the Enayetpur Spur Dam area on Sunday with five friends, including Jahid Hasan Anchol, a resident of Sirajganj town.

At around 2:30PM, Jisan and three other friends entered the river to swim, while Anchol stayed out of the water. Jisan suddenly went under and failed to resurface. His friends could not rescue him.

A five-member diving team from Rajshahi began search operations later that evening, continuing until around 9:30PM before suspending the effort for the night.

The team resumed the search on Monday morning, when Jisan’s body surfaced nearby and was recovered with the assistance of police, firefighters and local residents.

After completing the necessary procedures, police and Fire Service personnel handed over the body to his family.
