Two cousins have died by drowning after entering a pond to bathe in Magura. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon in the Mollapara area of Magura Sadar Upazila.
The victims, both 9 years old, were Huzaifa—son of Imon Biswas—and Isa Ali—son of Ontor Biswas. They were cousins. Huzaifa was a second-grade student at Magura Government Primary School No. 4.
Sharifa Begum, Huzaifa’s mother, stated that the two children had gone to play near their home and decided to bathe in the pond. When Isa Ali began to struggle in the water, Huzaifa attempted to save him; however, both children eventually submerged and drowned.
Another child witnessed the incident and alerted the families. Relatives and local residents rushed to the scene, recovered the children, and transported them to the 250-bed Magura Sadar Hospital. Upon examination, the physician on duty in the emergency department, Harashit Biswas, declared both children dead.
The hospital premises were filled with the wailing of grieving relatives, and a pall of gloom has descended upon the entire area.
Faruk Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Magura Sadar Police Station, confirmed that he had received reports of the two children’s drowning. The bodies have been placed in the temporary morgue at the Sadar Hospital, and legal proceedings regarding the incident are currently underway.
