A Jamaat-e-Islami activist was beaten to death by rivals following a previous dispute at Amjader Bazar in Chauddagram Upazila of Cumilla on Monday (October 26) morning.
The deceased was identified as Kazi Yusuf Hossain, 45, son of late Ijjat Ali of Konkapait village. Yusuf was an activist of Jamaat-e-Islami and also known locally as an Islamic singer.
Chauddagram Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Arif Hossain confirmed the incident.
According to local sources, an altercation took place on Saturday (October 24) between Yusuf and a tractor driver employed by Fariha Enterprise, an establishment owned by local businessman Abul Kalam Azad, over loading and unloading sand at Konkapait School ground. During the altercation, Azad reportedly threatened Yusuf and warned him not to enter the Amjader Bazar area.
When Yusuf went to Amjader Bazar on Monday morning, Azad's associates launched an attack on him. He was severely beaten and collapsed on the ground. Bystanders attempted to intervene but were unable to save him.
Family members rescued Yusuf in critical condition and took him to the Chauddagram Upazila Health Complex.
Chauddagram Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Rashid Ahmed Chowdhury stated that Yusuf was provided primary medical care at the emergency department and referred to Comilla for advanced treatment due to his deteriorating condition. However, he succumbed to his injuries en route to Comilla.
Abul Kalam Azad and his associates went into hiding following the incident, rendering them unavailable for comment.
Chauddagram Upazila Jamaat Secretary Muhammad Belal Hossain identified Yusuf as a party activist, demanding a fair investigation, immediate arrest, and exemplary punishment for those involved in the killing.
OC Arif Hossain said police recovered the body and sent it to Comilla Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Operations are underway to arrest the perpetrators, and legal proceedings are currently in progress.
