In a greater move, a National Board of Revenue (NBR) led joint raid has seized 2,359 litres of alcohol and beer from Kingfisher Restaurant & Bar in Gulshan in the capital, for which the bar could not show valid documents. The seized goods are worth about Tk 4.03 crore including duties, according to the NBR.
NBR said in a press release on Monday that a joint team of four intelligence units carried out the raid at the restaurant on Road 45, Plot 33, Gulshan, at 12.30am on Sunday night.
The raid followed a tip-off received by NBR. The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) had information that high-duty goods, mainly alcohol and alcoholic drinks, were being collected and sold through illegal sources or smuggling to avoid customs duties.
During the raid, officials found alcohol and beer in the restaurant’s warehouse and display area. They also found a large stock of alcohol and beer in a hidden room inside the premises. The stock had not been recorded in the official register.
