Political leaders, rights activists and cultural organisations have condemned the alleged obstruction of freedom fighter Manik Pashari’s burial in Pirojpur, demanding an impartial investigation and accountability for those responsible.
A torchlight procession was held in the capital on Sunday, organised by the Bangladesh Students Union, Bangladesh Youth Union and Udichi Shilpi Gosthi, protesting the incident. Marchers moved from Paltan towards the National Press Club, chanting slogans including, “My land, my mother"it shall never become Pakistan.”
Pashari, 87, died at around 10:00am on Saturday after a two-month illness. A resident of Chitlia village in Shankar Pasha Union of Pirojpur Sadar, he had testified against former Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delawar Hossain Sayeedi in a case concerning crimes against humanity committed during the 1971 Liberation War.
According to reports and statements by political leaders, local Jamaat-e-Islami activists allegedly opposed his burial, disputing his status as a freedom fighter. A grave prepared at the family home was reportedly filled in, forcing his daughter and two sisters to dig another grave at night using mobile phone lights. He was eventually buried under police protection after receiving a guard of honour at the Police Lines.
Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader condemned the incident as an affront to the dignity of the Liberation War and fundamental human values. He called for an impartial investigation into the allegations against local Jamaat activists and exemplary punishment for those found responsible.
