Youth killed in clash with cousin

A 25-year-old man was killed in a clash with his cousins over a land and pond dispute in Companiganj upazila of Sylhet.
The deceased was identified as Akhtar Hossain, son of Kala Mia of Batumara village under North Ranikhai union.
He died while undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital around 5:45 AM on Monday.
According to local sources, a longstanding dispute over land and ownership of a pond existed between Kala Mia’s family and the family of his deceased brother Abdul Halim.
Around 2:00 AM on Monday, Akhtar and several others were draining the pond with a pump to catch fish when their cousins allegedly attacked them with locally made weapons.
A clash broke out between the two sides, leaving at least five people injured. At one stage, a spear-like weapon pierced Akhtar’s back and came out through his abdomen.
Police went to the hospital around 10:00 AM on Monday, prepared an inquest report and sent the body to the morgue for autopsy.
Police also arrested Akhtar’s cousin Jewel Ahmed, 22, who was receiving treatment at the hospital. Two of Jewel’s brothers reportedly fled the hospital.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Companiganj Police Station Usman Gani, that the clash stemmed from a land dispute and a disagreement over draining the pond to catch fish.
Three people from the opposing side were receiving treatment, but two fled the hospital while one was arrested, he said.
No complaint had been filed in connection with the incident at the time of reporting. The body will be handed over to the family after the autopsy, the police official added.
