A sudden national grid failure triggered a major power blackout across parts of eastern Dhaka and Chittagong on Tuesday (October 27), leaving key government installations including the Bangladesh Secretariat and Bangladesh Bank without electricity.
The power disruption occurred at 12:43 PM local time, cutting off electricity to extensive residential and commercial zones in the capital, including Moghbazar, Khilgaon, and Bonosree, as well as several areas in Chittagong.
The underlying technical cause of the grid trip remains under investigation.
Official personnel from Power Grid Bangladesh PLC (PGCB) confirmed that engineering teams have initiated emergency restoration protocols to stabilize the national grid frequency and systematically restore power supply across affected power distribution zones. Emergency backup generators were activated at essential administrative and banking facilities to maintain core operational continuity.
