National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam has expressed grave concern over the potential suffering of ordinary citizens during the upcoming holy month of Ramadan, citing the continuous rise in prices of gas, fuel, and essential commodities.
He noted that while salaries for government employees have been increased, those in the private sector, including garment workers, have not received corresponding pay hikes, making daily life increasingly difficult under persistent inflationary pressure.
Nahid Islam made these remarks on Tuesday (October 27) afternoon during an exchange-of-views meeting in Gazipur, organized to review organizational progress and formulate central strategy for upcoming local elections.
"Prices of gas, fuel, and daily necessities are climbing steadily in the country. If this trend continues, it is difficult to predict how severe the situation will become during the upcoming Ramadan," Nahid remarked.
He emphasized that raising salaries solely for public sector employees is insufficient and urged the authorities to urgently address pay structures for private sector personnel, particularly RMG workers. He stressed that aligning incomes with the cost of living across all professions is essential to controlling the impacts of inflation.
Extending support to workers' legitimate demands, the NCP chief urged the government to rationalize wages, warning that a growing gap between household incomes and living costs will inevitably deepen public distress.
