A court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment with hard labor for the rape of a five-year-old child. Additionally, he has been fined Tk. 100,000; in default of payment, he will face an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment.
The verdict was delivered on Tuesday afternoon by Nityananda Sarkar, judge of the Lalmonirhat Tribunal for the Prevention of Violence Against Children.
According to court sources, on July 18, 2018, a five-year-old child returned home in the South Shiberkuti area of Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila, crying and bleeding. When questioned by her mother, the child explained that a neighbor, Alamgir Hossain, had lured her to his home by promising her chocolate, where he subsequently raped her.
Following the incident, the child was admitted to Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital in critical condition. The victim's father, Md. Anwar Hossain, filed a case at the local police station.
After a lengthy judicial process and the testimony of 11 witnesses, the court found the accused, Alamgir Hossain, guilty under Section 9(1) of the Prevention of Repression Against Women and Children Act, 2000 (amended in 2003).
Expressing satisfaction with the verdict, state counsel Advocate Lutfor Rahman stated, "We have received justice. This was a horrific incident, and the honorable court has delivered a just ruling. Such a verdict will help curb criminal tendencies in society."
