West Indies Test captain Roston Chase has advised the new members of his squad to shed all preconceived notions and approach the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh with a clear and open mind.
The skipper made these remarks ahead of the two-match Test series, scheduled to commence on Wednesday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.
Among the current touring squad, only Joshua Da Silva, John Campbell, Jomel Warrican, Kemar Roach, and captain Chase have prior experience playing Test matches in Bangladesh, leaving the remaining players to navigate unfamiliar subcontinental conditions.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Chase said, "We have told the newcomers to play what they see in front of them. They shouldn't walk into the field with fixed expectations about whether the pitch will spin or seam, but rather maintain a clear and open mindset to do whatever it takes to succeed in any given situation."
"We are not following one rigid strategy. Each player has their own style, strengths, and weaknesses. How we play will depend on the conditions, the scoreboard, and the match situation," he added.
Assessing the Mirpur surface, Chase noted that while the pitch appears spin-friendly on top, it looks somewhat dry underneath. However, he emphasized that regardless of the conditions, the team that adapts fastest over four innings will emerge victorious.
Acknowledging that the team will miss the services of in-form batter Shai Hope during the series, the skipper expressed confidence that his absence presents a valuable opportunity for other batsmen to step up and prove themselves.
