A Dhaka court on Tuesday remanded 14 leaders and activists of the banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations for three days in a case over an alleged anti-state rally, provocative slogans and plans for sabotage in the capital’s Paltan area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana passed the order after the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Mirajul Islam of Paltan Model Police Station, sought seven days of remand.
According to the case statement, around 100 to 120 leaders and activists of the Awami League and banned Chhatra League gathered near Azad Products Lane in Old Paltan on October 24 and allegedly chanted anti-state slogans and planned acts of sabotage.
Police said the accused attempted to flee when officers arrived but were detained with the help of local people. They were subsequently arrested in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
During the hearing, the prosecution supported the remand plea, while defence lawyers sought its cancellation. The court granted three days of remand after hearing both sides.
Police said interrogation was necessary to identify absconding suspects, trace alleged financiers of the planned sabotage and recover weapons and other equipment.
State counsel Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed the court order. Four children allegedly involved in the incident have been sent to a juvenile correction facility.
