The Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) has arrested a former journalist and seized 5,200 Yaba tablets from a microbus bearing a "Press" sticker during a raid in the capital's Kadamtali area on Tuesday (October 27) morning.
The arrestee was identified as Hossain Sharif, alias Sohel, 45. Media equipment, including a video camera, two broadcast booms, and smartphones, was recovered from his vehicle. However, DNC officials confirmed that he is no longer active in the journalism profession.
The operation was conducted around 6:30AM on Tuesday near M/s Khan & Chowdhury Filling Station on Matuail Mukti Sarani Polder Road under Kadamtali Police Station.
Md Anwar Hossain, Deputy Director of DNC Dhaka Metro (South) Office, said officers intercepted a white Toyota Noah microbus arriving from Cox's Bazar based on suspicion. Upon questioning, Sharif failed to provide satisfactory documentation regarding his current media affiliation despite displaying "Press" signs and carrying broadcast gear.
During a search, officers recovered 4,200 Yaba tablets packed in 21 blue zipper bags inside a compartment beside the steering wheel, along with an additional 1,000 Yaba pills taped inside his trousers pocket.
In addition to the 5,200 Yaba pills, the DNC seized the microbus, a Panasonic video camera, two broadcast booms bearing the logos of "Asian TV" and "Sorejomin", two smartphones, and a feature phone.
Preliminary interrogation revealed that the suspect previously worked in journalism but had been using his former credentials, broadcast gear, and "Press" stickers as a cover for illegal narcotics trafficking, according to the official.
A case has been filed against Hossain Sharif under the Narcotics Control Act, 2018, at Kadamtali Police Station.
