LALMONIRHAT, Oct 27: Farmers blocked the Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway in Hatibandha upazila for about an hour on Tuesday, protesting an alleged fertiliser shortage and irregularities in distribution during the crucial early maize cultivation season.

The blockade began in the Parulia Bazar area of Patikapara Union in the morning, disrupting traffic as farmers accused a local fertiliser dealer of selling supplies on the black market and favouring selected buyers.

The farmers said delays in obtaining fertiliser threatened crop growth, reduced yields and risked financial losses for families dependent on maize cultivation.

They alleged that fertiliser distribution through Messers Munna Traders was being managed by two local individuals, identified as Jadu Member and Bhuttu. According to the farmers, selected buyers received 10 to 12 sacks of fertiliser at night, while ordinary farmers had to make repeated visits without getting the supplies they needed.

The allegations could not be independently verified, and comments from the accused individuals were not immediately available.

Ekramul, a farmer from Ward No. 1 of Patikapara Union, said farmers had taken to the streets after repeatedly failing to obtain fertiliser.

“Farmers need fertiliser at a particular time. If we cannot get it when needed, how will we and our families survive? We are even willing to pay Tk 100 to Tk 200 extra in the open market to ensure we can cultivate our land properly,” he said.

Mominur Islam, a farmer from Ward No. 8 in the char area, demanded an end to irregularities and urged authorities to ensure genuine farmers received fertiliser at government-fixed prices.

Another farmer, Azizul Islam, warned that delays in applying fertiliser could hamper maize growth and reduce yields, affecting households that depend on the crop for their livelihoods.

Hatibandha Upazila Agriculture Officer Harun-or-Rashid said sufficient fertiliser stocks were available, although distribution would take time.

“Fertiliser distribution is currently underway in six wards and is expected to be completed within the next two days. If necessary, supplies from next month’s allocation can also be provided,” he said.

Hatibandha Upazila Nirbahi Officer Dipan Mitra urged farmers to remain patient, assuring them that all eligible farmers holding fertiliser cards would receive supplies.
