A Dhaka court has approved the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence’s (DGFI) request to take two of its members into military custody for proceedings under the Army Act over the alleged kidnapping of a motorcycle trader and an attempt to extort Tk 10 lakh from him. The accused, Sergeant Al Mamun and soldier Nuruzzaman, were among six people arrested on October 25 over the alleged abduction of Md Sharif, a motorcycle trader from Shyamoli in the capital.
In a letter to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court, the DGFI sought their custody to conduct a court of inquiry and take disciplinary action under military law. Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ashraful Haque granted the application after a hearing on Monday. Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court Public Prosecutor Omar Faruque Faruqi said military authorities could seek custody of serving military personnel for proceedings under military law, in accordance with the relevant legal provisions. He stressed that the victim must receive justice regardless of where the case is tried.
