Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) launched an eviction drive in the capital’s Gulistan area on Wednesday to clear footpaths of illegal shops and ensure safer movement for pedestrians.
The drive began around 10am in front of Dhaka Trade Centre, where city corporation officials removed illegally operated shops surrounding the shopping complex and demolished unauthorised extensions that violated approved designs.
Mobile shops occupying space beneath the Hanif Flyover were also dismantled during the operation.
However, many traders had removed their stalls before the drive began after news of the operation spread in advance.
Despite several previous eviction drives in the area, the footpaths had gradually returned to their former condition, with illegal shops again occupying pedestrian spaces.
DSCC officials said the eviction campaign would continue to keep footpaths free from encroachment and ensure safe and unobstructed movement for pedestrians.
