By-elections for the Thakurgaon-1 constituency are set to take place on Thursday, October 29, due to Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir elected as the president.
A total of five candidates, including representatives from BNP and Jamaat, are contesting the by-poll. Local administration completed all election preparations following the official end of campaigning on Tuesday morning, October 27.
However, voter enthusiasm appears muted compared to the general election held eight months ago. Local residents noted that turnout and excitement are relatively low, citing the frequency of recent voting.
"Since the election is happening in only one constituency, the excitement is quite low," said a local voter. "With nationwide elections held just six months ago, people do not feel the same level of enthusiasm."
Despite the low excitement, voters emphasized that they intend to support a candidate who will prioritize local development and foster a drug-free society.
Rangpur Divisional Commissioner Jahangir Alam assured that all measures have been implemented to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election. Law enforcement personnel have been deployed to secure polling centers and protect voters.
With over 500,000 registered voters in the constituency, ensuring strong voter turnout remains the primary challenge for election authorities, who confirmed that awareness campaigns were conducted to encourage participation.
