Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon has said the government plans to introduce the same question papers for board examinations in schools and madrasas to investigate allegations that madrasa students secure more GPA-5 results.
He made the remarks while addressing the 34th founding anniversary programme of Bangladesh Open University (BOU) as the chief guest on Wednesday.
The minister said concerns had been raised over the higher number of GPA-5 achievers in madrasas and that using the same question papers would help assess the reasons behind the difference in results.
He argued that students from schools and madrasas compete for admission to the same universities and study the same subjects, leaving little reason to use different question papers for their board examinations.
Milon also highlighted discrepancies uncovered during the re-scrutiny of examination scripts. He claimed that the results of 45,000 students had changed after nearly 1.2 million answer scripts were reviewed.
Of them, around 5,000 students who had initially failed were declared to have passed, while 3,079 students received GPA-5, he said.
The minister alleged irregularities in the evaluation of examination scripts and said the examiners responsible would be identified and brought under the law. He also stressed the need to provide training for examiners to improve the quality of assessment.
On the transfer of teachers receiving salaries under the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) scheme, Milon said the issue had become a major challenge for him.
He said a transfer application had been developed to facilitate the process and address cases where teachers had been posted far from their home districts.
The minister explained that teachers posted in districts far from their homes could be transferred closer to their respective areas, where appropriate. However, he said many teachers were seeking transfers to well-known institutions in Dhaka rather than simply requesting postings closer to home.
Referring to pressure from teacher representatives over the transfer process, Milon said the responsibility for arranging transfers rested with the ministry and urged teachers to focus on their teaching duties while the government worked on the matter.
