Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon has announced an initiative to establish a ‘University of Vocational’ under the supervision of Bangladesh Open University (BOU) to promote skills-based and job-oriented education.
He made the announcement at a programme marking the 34th founding anniversary of Bangladesh Open University at its main campus in Gazipur on Wednesday (October 28).
Addressing the anniversary discussion as the chief guest, the minister stressed the need to develop a skilled workforce in line with workplace demands alongside modern and technology-based education. He said Bangladesh Open University must play a more responsible role in this regard.
He also emphasised improving the quality of education and expanding opportunities for students to acquire practical skills. Education, he said, should not be limited to obtaining degrees or certificates but must be effectively linked to employment and skills development.
The programme was chaired by BOU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan. The university’s pro-vice-chancellor, treasurer, deans of various faculties, teachers, officers and employees attended the event.
Earlier in the morning, the anniversary celebrations began with the release of pigeons and a colourful procession. Various programmes were held throughout the day on the university campus to mark the occasion.
