The government has no immediate plan to raise edible oil prices ahead of Ramadan, Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said on Wednesday (October 28), assuring that essential commodities would remain in adequate supply during the holy month.
The minister said supplies of edible oil, chickpeas, lentils and sugar were sufficient in the import pipeline to meet Ramadan demand. He added that international commodity prices and shipping costs could affect domestic prices, while discussions were underway with importers over rising chickpea prices.
He also said no major difficulties had been reported in opening letters of credit (LCs), adding that the government would consult Bangladesh Bank if importers faced banking-related problems.
