BNP Acting Secretary General and Prime Minister’s Political Adviser Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has called for building barrages on the Padma and Teesta rivers to tackle reduced river flows, rising salinity and biodiversity loss linked to the Farakka Barrage.
He made the remarks at a roundtable in Gulshan, Dhaka, on Wednesday evening.
Rizvi said storing excess monsoon water for the dry season could protect agriculture, maintain ecological balance and conserve biodiversity.
He also called for stronger negotiations with neighbouring countries to secure Bangladesh’s fair share of water, questioning the removal of the guarantee clause from the 1977 Ganges water-sharing agreement.
He urged authorities to expedite the proposed projects, saying the barrages could help restore river flows and protect agriculture, forests and ecosystems.
