Bangladesh's plans for the opening Test against West Indies suffered an unexpected setback when Towhid Hridoy was carried off the field on a stretcher after developing a painful leg problem during his innings in Mirpur on Wednesday.

Hridoy had been making a valuable contribution after Bangladesh lost three wickets when the incident occurred during the afternoon session. The batter, who came into the playing XI in place of the injured Mushfiqur Rahim, had scored 42 off 84 balls, striking three boundaries, and was helping the hosts rebuild their innings.

The incident unfolded as Hridoy completed a single off West Indies spinner Joshua Bishop. He appeared to struggle while moving between the wickets before stopping and holding his leg. He subsequently went down on the field as the team physiotherapist attended to him.

After treatment, Hridoy was unable to continue and was taken away on a stretcher, with Litton Das coming to the crease in his place. The Bangladesh team had yet to confirm the precise nature or severity of the problem by the close of play.

The timing was particularly unfortunate for Hridoy, who had been providing stability at a stage when Bangladesh needed a partnership.

His stand with opener Shadman Islam yielded 80 runs, helping the hosts recover from the loss of captain Najmul Hossain Shanto.

Hridoy's innings also carried added significance because he was playing in place of Mushfiqur, who missed the Test after injuring his right index finger during practice on Tuesday.

The absence of one experienced batter had already forced Bangladesh to adjust their line-up, and Hridoy's injury created another concern for the team management.

The immediate priority will be to establish whether the problem is limited to cramping or involves a more serious injury. Until medical assessments provide clarity, his availability for the remainder of the match remains uncertain.

For Bangladesh, the concern extends beyond one innings. Hridoy has been working to establish himself in Test cricket, and a prolonged absence could interrupt that progress.

The team will hope the episode proves temporary, although no conclusion can be drawn before the medical findings are known.

Bangladesh will await further information on Hridoy's condition before deciding how best to manage the remainder of the match and their batting resources.
