Despite their age and physical limitations, 98-year-old Jasim Uddin and 89-year-old Amela Bewa arrived at a polling centre in Thakurgaon-1 to exercise their voting rights in the by-election.
They reached Kumarpur High School polling centre in Bhulli upazila around 10:30am on Thursday. Jasim received assistance from an Ansar member, while Amela leaned on the shoulder of her nephew, Abdul Rashid.
Both struggled to speak, making it impossible to collect their comments.
Presiding Officer Md Arif Hossain said voter turnout was low in the morning but gradually increased as the day progressed. The centre has 3,076 registered voters.
Thakurgaon District Election Officer and Returning Officer Md Kamrul Islam said adequate security measures had been taken to ensure a free, fair and peaceful election.
A total of 185 polling centres are operating across Thakurgaon Sadar, Ruhia and Bhulli, with 515,853 registered voters in the constituency.
Five candidates are contesting the by-election following the withdrawal of BNP candidate Md Obaidullah Masud. The main contest is expected to be between BNP candidate Mirza Faisal Amin and Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Delawar Hossain.
The seat fell vacant after BNP's Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who won it in the February 12 parliamentary election, was elected president.
