A Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced AKM Mominul Haque Sayeed, former councillor of Ward-9 of Dhaka South City Corporation, to seven years in prison in a corruption case involving illegal wealth accumulation.
Judge Hamidul Islam of Special Judge Court-2 delivered the verdict, sentencing him to five years for acquiring assets beyond his known sources of income and two years for criminal misconduct.
The court also ordered the confiscation of seized assets worth Tk 2.93 crore and imposed a fine of Tk 5.60 crore for the illegally acquired wealth, ACC prosecutor SM Abul Kalam Azad said.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case on November 20, 2019, alleging that Sayeed had acquired Tk 4.47 crore in illegal assets by abusing his power and engaging in casino-related and other unlawful activities.
After completing its investigation, ACC Assistant Director Ataur Rahman Sarker submitted the charge sheet on April 17, 2022, alleging that Sayeed possessed assets worth Tk 5.50 crore beyond his known sources of income.
During the trial, the court recorded testimony from all 13 prosecution witnesses. Sayeed, who remained absconding, could not participate in his defence. The court issued a conviction warrant and an arrest warrant against him.
