The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) has instructed relevant offices and government educational institutions to provide information and cooperate with a research team assessing the feasibility of installing rooftop solar power systems at rural government educational institutions.

Following a directive from the Ministry of Education, the DSHE sent letters to field-level officials and heads of educational institutions on Thursday, October 29, asking them to take necessary steps to support the research.

The initiative follows a letter issued by the Power Division on August 11. The Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education subsequently forwarded the matter to the DSHE on October 12.

According to the Power Division’s letter, Central Renewable Energy Services Limited (CRESL), an organisation appointed by the SAARC Energy Centre, will conduct a study on the potential for installing rooftop solar power systems at rural government educational institutions in Bangladesh.

The study will assess the technical, economic, environmental and institutional feasibility of the proposed systems.

As part of the research, the team will visit selected educational institutions and relevant government offices to collect data, conduct surveys and assess infrastructure. The Power Division sought cooperation from the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, the Secondary and Higher Education Division, and the Technical and Madrasah Education Division.

Following the October 12 communication from the Secondary and Higher Education Division, the DSHE’s General Administration Wing issued instructions to relevant officials and institutions on Thursday.

The instructions call on DSHE field-level directors, principals of government colleges, relevant officials of government schools, district education officers, and upazila and thana secondary education officers to provide the necessary information and assist the research team.

However, the letters do not indicate a final decision to install rooftop solar power systems at the institutions. The current initiative is limited to assessing feasibility and gathering the information required for the study.
