The Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA) has approved power startup operations at the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, paving the way for electricity generation and trial supply to the national grid, officials said on Thursday (October 29).

Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Ltd Managing Director Zahedul Hasan said BAERA Chairman M Mahmudul Hasan had granted the required approval after the successful completion of preliminary physical startup tests.

Project authorities expect trial electricity supply to the national grid to begin next month, subject to the successful completion of commissioning activities and regulatory requirements.

During the Stage-C power startup phase, engineers will gradually increase reactor power while testing the reactor, coolant systems, turbine-generator, electrical infrastructure, control systems and safety mechanisms to ensure safe and stable operation.

The generator's connection to the national grid will be a key milestone. Initially, tests will be conducted at low reactor power, which will be increased gradually based on technical assessments. Trial supply could begin when the reactor reaches 30-35 per cent of its thermal capacity.

Project officials expect the first unit to supply at least 300 megawatts of electricity to the national grid by December, provided the necessary tests and commissioning activities proceed successfully.

However, experts said approval for power startup does not mean commercial production has begun. Trial supply, completion of commissioning and commercial operation are separate stages, each requiring technical verification and regulatory clearance.

The Rooppur plant has two units, each with a generation capacity of 1,200MW, giving the project a combined capacity of 2,400MW upon full operation.

The project's deadline, initially set for December 2025, has been extended twice to June 2028. Its estimated cost has risen to Tk 138,686 crore, partly due to changes in the dollar exchange rate and other financial and global factors.
