Bangladesh squandered a promising overnight position to be bowled out for 272 before West Indies responded with a solid opening stand on the second day of the first Test in Mirpur on Thursday.

Resuming at 213 for three, Bangladesh lost their final seven wickets for just 59 runs, with left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican exploiting the home side's fragile lower order to finish with five for 53. West Indies reached 89 for one in 27 overs before bad light brought an early end to play, trailing by 183 runs.

The morning began on a positive note for Bangladesh as Shadman Islam converted his overnight 99 into his third Test century. The left-handed opener reached the landmark with a couple off Joshua Bishop's second delivery of the day, drawing applause from his teammates.

His stay ended at 105 off 234 balls when Bishop trapped him leg-before. Bangladesh reviewed the decision but failed to overturn it, and the dismissal triggered a collapse that undermined the hosts' strong position.

Towhid Hridoy, who had retired hurt on 42 on Wednesday with a muscle problem, returned to bat but could not add to his overnight score. Bishop bowled him shortly afterwards, leaving Bangladesh at 221 for five.

Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz briefly offered resistance with a 32-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Miraz made 15 before Warrican breached his defence, and the visitors quickly worked through the tail.

Shamar Joseph removed Nayeem Hasan and Hasan Mahmud, while Warrican returned to dismiss Taijul Islam and Shoriful Islam. Litton remained unbeaten on 34 off 88 balls, but received little support as Bangladesh were dismissed in 97.4 overs.

West Indies made a confident start in reply. Brandon King scored 15 before falling to Hasan Mahmud, but John Campbell counterattacked with an unbeaten 53 off 65 balls, including six fours and two sixes. Tagenarine Chanderpaul was 21 not out as the pair added an unbroken 60 for the second wicket.

Bangladesh had opportunities to make further inroads but failed to hold on to two chances offered by Campbell, allowing the opener to take control of the innings.

With nine wickets remaining and 183 runs still to make up, West Indies will aim to narrow the deficit when play resumes. Bangladesh, meanwhile, need early breakthroughs to recover some of the ground lost through their second-morning collapse.

The first Test continues in Mirpur, with the second scheduled to begin in Sylhet on November 5.
