Bangladesh have suffered another fitness concern in their ongoing first Test against West Indies, with wicketkeeper-batter Liton Das sustaining a right elbow injury during the hosts' first innings in Mirpur.
Liton remained unbeaten on 34 as Bangladesh were bowled out for 272 on the second morning. However, the injury prevented him from keeping wickets when West Indies began their reply, forcing backup wicketkeeper Jaker Ali Anik to take over.
National team physiotherapist Bayjedul Islam Khan confirmed that Liton had suffered a contusion after being struck on the elbow while batting. The batter was placed under observation by the team's medical staff.
The setback comes at an unfortunate time for Liton, who had only recently recovered from a hip joint injury sustained after Bangladesh's one-off Test against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi. That injury ruled him out of the subsequent ODI tri-series and raised doubts over his availability for the West Indies series.
He eventually regained fitness and returned to the playing XI for the opening Test, but the latest problem has again raised questions over his condition.
Liton's experience and batting ability make him an important part of Bangladesh's middle order. His availability for the second innings could prove significant as the hosts look to recover from their first-innings collapse and remain competitive in the match.
Team sources indicated that he was expected to bat in the second innings, although his condition remained under observation. His ability to resume wicketkeeping duties will also depend on his recovery.
Bangladesh will hope the injury proves manageable as they prepare for the remainder of the Test and the second match of the series in Sylhet, scheduled to begin on November 5.
