Truck driver held over deaths of cop, BNP leader

KALIGANJ, GAZIPUR, Oct 29: Special Response Battalion (SRB) arrested truck driver Md Mazharul Islam early Thursday in connection with a crash that killed a police sub-inspector and a local BNP leader in Gazipur’s Kaliganj Upazila on October 23.

Islam was arrested around 1:30 am in Charkhali under Indurkani Upazila in Pirojpur District, following a joint operation by SRB units 1 and 8 using information technology to identify him. He was later handed over to Kaliganj Police Station.

Police seized the truck and arrested its 20-year-old helper, Raju Sheikh, on Wednesday at a cement factory in Danga of Palash Upazila in Narsingdi District.

Sub-Inspector Md Mizanur Rahman and local BNP leader Rafiqul Islam Molla were killed when a speeding truck hit them on the night of October 23. 

Mizanur and other officers were returning to the police station after a night patrol when the truck hit the BNP leader, who was standing beside their vehicle. Several police officers were also injured.

A police constable, Anwar Hossain, filed a case over the incident. The driver’s arrest marks further progress in the investigation.
