The motorcycle of former Air Force officer Tahshif Souri has been found near the spot where his floating body was recovered from the Turag River in Dhaka, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) chief has said.

PBI chief Mostafa Kamal told bdnews24.com on Friday morning that the motorcycle had been recovered near the scene.

A PBI superintendent of police said the motorcycle was found around 50 yards from the spot where Tahshif's body was recovered.

However, another PBI superintendent of police, Abu Yusuf, said authorities were verifying the ownership of the motorcycle and that the bureau was assisting the naval police with the investigation.

Tahshif, who came into public attention over claims that he had recorded video footage of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina leaving the country, was found dead on Wednesday afternoon. His body was recovered from the Rajabari Ghat area of the Turag River.

Ahmed Shahriar Reza Dip, a younger friend who had called Tahshif before he went missing, was taken into PBI custody on Thursday night for questioning.

A PBI superintendent of police said investigators conducted overnight operations at several locations with Dip.

According to the officer, Dip told investigators that he and Tahshif were talking near the scene when some people chased them. Tahshif jumped into the river, while Dip fled.

Investigators are verifying Dip's statement and other information obtained during questioning.

PBI chief Mostafa Kamal said investigators had obtained several pieces of information after taking Dip into custody but declined to disclose details in the interest of the investigation.

Tahshif's father, Enayetul Karim, said his son had left home on Tuesday evening after receiving a phone call from Dip. At around 1:35am, Tahshif sent a message to his mother's mobile phone saying he was returning home.

However, his family said they had been unable to contact him since then. A close relative also questioned whether the last voice message sent to his mother's phone was actually from Tahshif.

The former Air Force officer had left his home in Diabari, Uttara, on his motorcycle. When his body was recovered, naval police found his wristwatch and wallet but had not located the motorcycle.

Dip had earlier told bdnews24.com that he and Tahshif went to a garage to repair Tahshif's motorcycle after leaving home. They later had dinner at the Kukruku restaurant in Uttara's Ruap Shopping Complex.

He said they left the restaurant on their respective motorcycles and travelled together as far as the House Building area of Uttara before separating at around midnight. Dip claimed he returned home alone and knew nothing further about Tahshif's whereabouts.

PBI chief Mostafa Kamal said investigators were checking other locations the two might have visited besides the motorcycle repair shop and the restaurant.
