A woman who was found dead alongside her two daughters at a district council rest house in Barguna allegedly killed the children before dying by suicide over financial distress linked to more than Tk 400,000 in loans, police have said.
The preliminary findings were disclosed by Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Md Mukit Hasan Khan at a press conference at the Barguna Superintendent of Police's office on Thursday.
According to police, the woman, Iti Rani, 34, was struggling with loans taken from several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and individuals. Investigators believe the financial pressure and anxiety over repaying the loans led her to kill her daughters, Aradhya Biswas, 12, and Anuradha Biswas, 3, before taking her own life.
Police said Iti Rani had been married to Dulal Chandra Biswas, a resident of the Karoitala area under Barguna municipality, for around 15 years. Dulal ran a small tailoring shop alongside a small betel nut business, but his limited income was insufficient to meet the family's expenses.
To support the household and help improve her husband's business, Iti Rani borrowed Tk 227,723 from five local NGOs. Her husband also borrowed Tk 80,000 from an NGO and another Tk 100,000 from two individuals. The family's total outstanding borrowing was estimated at Tk 407,723, according to police.
Although instalments on most of the NGO loans had been paid on time, Iti Rani reportedly remained distressed over the burden of repaying the full amount. She subsequently took a job as a cleaner at the Barguna District Council rest house to help support the family financially.
Police said she had started working there about two months before the incident.
On June 3, she went to the rest house with her two daughters. At around 11am, they arrived at the premises. Later that afternoon, other employees alerted police after finding the door of a room on the third floor locked from the inside.
Police recovered the body of the elder daughter, Aradhya, from one room and the bodies of Iti Rani and her younger daughter, Anuradha, from another locked room.
The discovery raised questions about whether the deaths were homicides or suicides. On June 9, Dulal Chandra Biswas filed a case with Barguna Police Station against unidentified persons.
Investigators subsequently examined the family's financial circumstances and found that the couple had accumulated debts from several NGOs and individuals.
Mukit Hasan Khan said the preliminary investigation indicated that financial hardship and mounting debt had left Iti Rani deeply distressed. He added that the family had no land of its own and lacked financial stability.
The case remains under investigation, and police said a report would be submitted to the court soon.
