A massive venomous Russell's Viper was rescued from a border field in Chuadanga's Damurhuda upazila by a local farmer before being handed over to the forest department.
The snake was spotted on Thursday afternoon near the zero line at Shimultola field in Munsipur village. Local farmer Hasan noticed the reptile attempting to bite a sheep around 4:30 PM.
He struck the snake with a stick to subdue it and later kept it locked in a cage. Word of the giant snake spread quickly, drawing a large crowd of curious onlookers to the scene.
Forest guard Shahajamal alias Ripon collected the snake from the location at around 8:30 PM after being informed by locals.
Damurhuda Upazila Forest Officer Suresh Mistri said he was currently in Chittagong for training and could not provide immediate details.
However, Jibanagar Forest Department Deputy Ranger Shariful Islam Kajol confirmed the reptile is a Russell's Viper. He noted that the snake is extremely venomous. The forest department has contacted the Khulna forest office to safely release the snake into the Sundarbans with the help of a specialist team.
