China’s Communist Party vows tough anti-corruption drive

China’s Communist Party (CPC) has reaffirmed its tough stance against corruption, pledging to strengthen institutional controls and curb opportunities for misconduct as part of its efforts to enforce strict party discipline.

The commitment was outlined at a press conference held by the CPC Central Committee on Friday (October 30) to explain the key outcomes of the fifth plenary session of the 20th CPC Central Committee.

Zhang Fuhai, deputy secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and deputy director of the National Commission of Supervision, said the anti-corruption strategy focused on ensuring that officials dare not, cannot and do not want to engage in corruption.

He said the CPC Central Committee, with Xi Jinping at its core, had intensified the anti-corruption campaign since the party’s 18th National Congress, strengthened institutional oversight and raised awareness to prevent corruption.

According to Zhang, disciplinary inspection and supervision agencies nationwide have investigated 810,500 cases of corruption and disciplinary violations since the 18th National Congress, with 7.922 million people punished, including 963 officials under central-level management.

The CPC Central Committee’s latest decisions on advancing strict party governance emphasise firmly pursuing an anti-corruption path with Chinese characteristics.
