The fourth shipment of uranium imported from Russia has arrived at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project site in Ishwardi of Pabna.

Three specialised trucks carrying the nuclear fuel entered the project area at 7:17 AM on Saturday (October 31) under tight security.

Ishwardi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Asaduzzaman Rahman confirmed the development. The shipment was transported to the site under army supervision, with security provided by other law enforcement agencies.

With this latest delivery, a total of four uranium shipments have arrived for the Rooppur project one additional shipment for Unit 1 and three for Unit 2.

Earlier, Russia's state-owned nuclear corporation Rosatom said it planned to transport 163 uranium fuel assemblies for Unit 2 in seven cargo shipments. Another 48 fuel assemblies would be delivered in two additional shipments to refuel Unit 1.

In total, nine shipments of nuclear fuel are expected to arrive in Bangladesh.

Built with Russian technology, the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant has two VVER-1200 reactor units. Unit 1 has already entered the ‘Power Startup Stage-C’ phase.

On Thursday (October 29), the chairman of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA) approved the commencement of Stage-C activities at Unit 1.

During this phase, the reactor's power capacity will be gradually increased to test various plant systems, including equipment, the turbine-generator, and operational and safety systems.

Once the necessary tests are successfully completed, the generator of Unit 1 will be connected to the national electricity grid in a process known as synchronisation.

If everything proceeds according to plan, the authorities aim to supply approximately 300 megawatts of electricity from Unit 1 to the national grid on a trial basis in November. However, the process remains subject to regulatory conditions and necessary approvals.
