Authorities have declared a holiday for 10 to 12 factories in Gazipur's Kaliakair after workers took to the Dhaka-Tangail highway to protest and demand increased wages and benefits.
Gazipur Industrial Police Superintendent Mohammad Amjad Hossain confirmed the development on Saturday afternoon, October 31.
According to police and local sources, the situation remained normal in the morning until workers suddenly began agitating and blocking the highway in the Palli Bidyut area after midday. Some agitated workers threw brickbats at factory premises, prompting authorities to announce closures to prevent further escalation.
The protest has brought traffic on the vital Dhaka-Tangail highway to a complete standstill, leaving commuters and drivers stranded. Law enforcement agencies remain on high alert at various points along the highway to control the situation and urge protesters to avoid violence.
