A violent clash broke out between police and protesting garment workers in Gazipur's Kaliakair on Saturday afternoon, October 31, creating a massive 10-kilometer traffic jam on the Dhaka-Tangail highway.
The blockade, which started around midday in the Palli Bidyut area, was staged by workers demanding a minimum monthly wage of 30,000 taka. Protesters blocked the vital artery with sandbags, timber, and bamboo before setting fires on the road, leaving vehicular movement completely halted for nearly five hours.
In response to the growing agitation, authorities declared a holiday across 15 industrial units from Konabari to Chandra.
Tensions escalated when law enforcement officers requested the crowd to vacate the highway to ease commuter suffering. Protesters refused, pelted stones at law enforcers, and vandalized several vehicles, including a police car.
To disperse the violent crowd, police fired tear gas shells and sound grenades. However, clashing continued as scattered groups of workers counter-attacked from nearby lanes.
Reinforcements, including Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs), were deployed to bring the volatile situation under control. A tense atmosphere currently prevails across key points including the Ansar Academy, Shafipur, and Palli Bidyut areas.
Gazipur Industrial Police Superintendent Mohammad Amjad Hossain confirmed that workers set fires at multiple points along the highway. He noted that sound grenades were used to safeguard public life and property, adding that police efforts to clear the road and restore order are ongoing.
